The binomial name means, loosely, the ‘sleep-bringing poppy’, referring to its narcotic properties. Opium Poppies have captured my imagination for as long as I can recall- their very appearance is so striking and unusual it is no wonder that wars have been waged and so many fallen helplessly under the poppy’s spell.
